How To Stay Hydrated During Summer
The hottest time of the year is here, but are you getting enough water? Summer is the one time of year where it’s especially important to stay hydrated due to the warmer temps outside. Staying hydrated will help keep you cool during the hot summer months and provide numerous health benefits. Water is the one nutrient that we can’t survive without so it’s vital that you’re staying healthy and hydrated at a time when you need it the most.
It’s widely known that you should be getting in at least eight cups of water each day, but during the summer months, you should increase your intake. And if you’re not sure if you’re hydrated or not, simply check your urine. The color and volume are good indicators of how hydrated you are. If your urine is pale yellow, then that means you’re drinking enough water. But if its dark yellow and you’re going to the bathroom a lot, you’re most likely dehydrated.
Dehydration has serious health consequences and even mild dehydration can be damaging to your body. Being dehydrated can cause you to suffer from headaches, fatigue and more. So as the temperature rises outside, make sure you are staying hydrated with these simple tips!
1. Carry a bottle of water with you everywhere you go
The best way to make sure that you’re drinking enough water to stay hydrated is by carrying a bottle wherever you go! Buy a reusable water bottle you love and carry it you as you go through the day, refilling it as needed. This way a drink of water is never too far off! Having it with you all the time will make you unconsciously sip it all the time, so you stay hydrated and refreshed in summer.
2. When you feel hazy, drink a cold glass of water
Studies have shown that whenever you start to feel frazzled or tired, drinking a cold cup of water can help you feel more alert and is a healthier way to get out of any midday slump. Water doesn't have to be be boring either. Add a few slices of cucumber, for those with a savoury preference, or straberries for those with a sweeter palate. Lemons are a
good way to add a little citrusy fresh favor to your water.
3. Eat water-rich foods
Drinking water isn’t the only way to get hydrated! Eating water-rich foods like fruits, yogurt, veggies and the like can help with your fluid intake. The good news is that summer is also the season with the most fresh and local produce. Visit your local Farmer's Market for some fresh local fruits and vegatables like watermelons, cantaloupes, grapes - all delicious and will help you stay hydrated!
